It’s been a while since the Epic Poker League sent out a press release, which had me starting to worry about the fledgling poker tour, but with its third Main Event stop of Season 1 just around the corner the EPL released its latest presser on Wednesday, and there was quite a reason for the announcement as the EPL announced they would be partnering with USA Today and Big Lead Sports.

The Epic Poker League’s Global Poker Index will now be featured in the print version of the USA Today newspaper as well as online –USA Today will be adding their brand to the Global poker index, creating the USA Today Global Poker Index.

Tom Beusse, president of the USA TODAY Sports Media Group was quoted in the press release as saying: “More Americans are playing and watching poker than ever before, and this partnership will enable us to provide that avid, growing audience with the content they want… The USA TODAY Global Poker Index will give our readers access to new and relevant content that’s easy to track and understand. It will also help open up the game of poker to the casual fan as well.”

The Epic Poker League will also be the exclusive poker content provider for Big Lead Sports (where EPL Commissioner Annie Duke has been featured as a guest columnist in the past). According to the press release the EPL will contribute to Big Lead Sports in a variety of ways: “The exclusive content will include highlights from tournament action featuring the world’s best professional poker players, reporting from Epic Poker’s team of trusted poker feature writers, and video teasers and content from the Epic Poker League.”

Thus far the Epic Poker League has been a polarizing entity in the poker world, with many players applauding their attempts at bringing poker to more of a mainstream audience, while other players have argued that the exclusivity of the EPL is bad for poker in the long-run. The EPL has also come under fire for its handling of two different situations regarding the conduct and ethics of players.

The next Epic Poker League event (the third leg of the four-leg tour) will take place at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, beginning with the EPL Pro/Am tournament on December 10th, 2011. The Main Event will be held a few days later on December 14th. As is the case for all Epic Poker League Main Events, only card-carrying members and the nine players that make the EPL Pro/Am final table are eligible to participate in the Main Event.
