Danish poker pro Frederik Jensen may not be a well-known name in the poker world, but the talented young player from Copenhagen is definitely going to get the attention he deserves now that he is an EPT Champion! Jensen won the PokerStars European Poker Tour Madrid Main Event this past weekend, earning nearly $650,000 for his efforts.

Jensen, who finished 2nd at the 2010 Aussie Millions Main Event and earned over $1 million for that showing, has very quietly amassed over $2 million in career tournament earnings since 2010, including winning a side event at the EPT Grand Final in 2011 and making the final table of the EPT Vilamoura Main Event in 2010.

The tournament saw a number of well-known pros look to be headed for the final table, including Taylor Paur, Melanie Weisner, Mike “Timex” McDonald, and Tristan Clemoncen, but in the end it was the lesser-known, but definitely not lesser-skilled, players who would be in the running for the title. The best-known player at the final table was Nicolas Levi, but he entered the day as the short-stack and could only manage a 7th place finish at his third EPT final table.

The final table chip-leader, Ricardo Ibanez struggled throughout the day and couldn’t seem to get anything going. His day ended in a disappointing 5th place.

After a 12-hour final table the final three players decided a deal was in their best interests –high blinds, fairly even chip-stacks, and sleepy eyes will do that to you—and decided on an equity-chop, leaving €110,000 to play for. Jensen was awarded €385,000, Andrei Stonescu received €330,000 (and was then eliminated in 3rd place), and Fraser McIntyre pocketed €290,000. After Stonescu’s elimination gave him a 2-1 chip-advantage over his heads-up opponent, Jensen quickly eliminated McIntyre (who did not hove the luck of the Irish on St. Patrick’s Day) to capture the title.

Here is a look at the Madrid Main Event final table payouts:

1. 1.Frederik Jensen – €495,000*

2. 2.Fraser MacIntyre – €290,000*

3. 3.Andrei Stoenescu – €330,000*

4. 4.Bruno Lopes – €140,000

5. 5.Ricardo Ibañez – €115,000

6. 6.Ilan Boujenah – €92,000

7. 7.Nicolas Levi – €69,450

8. 8.Jason Duval – €48,000

The PokerStars EPT will now move on to Campione, Italy from March 26th through the 31st, where the tour will host its typical €5,000 buy-in Main Event. After the stop in Northern Italy, the EPT will them move on to the penultimate stop on the Season 8 schedule in Berlin, Germany, which has historically been one of the most popular and best-attended stops on the EPT tour. The EPT will then wrap-up Season 8 with the EPT Grand Final, which after a one-year interlude in Madrid, Spain will be back in Monte Carlo, France.
