Negreanu comes up just short in EPT Grand High-Roller

Daniel Negreanu’s time in Monte Carlo for the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final paid off with the Team PokerStars Pro racking-up over €1,000,000 in cashes, but knowing Negreanu’s competitive streak, what will likely stick with him are the two close but not quite finishes in the High-Roller tournament and the Super-High-Roller tournament.

With the final eight players in the event including the likes of Negreanu, recent Super-High-Roller winner Justin Bonomo, and rising tournament star Noah Schwartz, it really was a murderer’s row lineup. Add to that the talents of Max Lykov, Phillip Gruissem, and Igor Kurganov and you can see why despite the smaller fields the High-Roller events are anything but easy.

Competing against a stacked final table in the €25,000 buy-in High-Roller tourney, Negreanu weaved his way through the final table to reach heads-up play against a tough young German Pro in Igor Kurganov. The two played a back-and-forth heads-up match with both men facing elimination at different points before Kurganov pulled away and grinded Negreanu down to claim the title and the €1 million first-place prize.

Here is a look at the final table payouts from yesterday’s High-Roller event:

1. Igor Kurganov — €1,080,000

2. Daniel Negreanu — €598,600

3. Philipp Gruissem — €366,000

4. Justin Bonomo — €266,000

5. Artem Litvinov — €216,000

6. Noah Schwartz — €166,000

7. Nathan Schoo — €133,000

8. Max Lykov — €100,000

With the win Kurganov became the fifth player to book a seven-figure-cash at the EPT Grand Final, joining Bonomo, Grand Final Main Event winner Mohsin Charania, Grand Final Main Event runner-up Lucille Cailly, and Tobias Renkenmaier, who was the runner-up to Bonomo in the Super-High-Roller event. Negreanu also booked over €1 million in winnings, but did so over two events, the Super-High-Roller and the High-Roller event.

Even though he hasn’t won a High-Roller event yet, Negreanu has one of the best track-records in these events over the past few years. In addition to his two final tables in Monte Carlo (6th in the Super-High-Roller and 2nd in the High-Roller tournament) Daniel has finished 5th at the 2012 PCA Super-High-Roller; 3rd at the 2011 WPT Five Star World Poker Classic Super-High-Roller; and 2nd at the 2011 PCA Super-High-Roller; racking up in the neighborhood of $3 million in these events.

With a few events left to be played in Monte Carlo (including the Champion of Champions tournament) Season 8 of the European Poker Tour is just about completed. The EPT has some big changes in store for Season 9, which we will post in an upcoming article, relaying all the details and changes for Season 9, as well as taking a look at the full schedule.
