PokerStars EPT San Remo Main Event underway

This is the second stop for the PokerStars EPT in San Remo this year as the tour transitioned from Season 7 to Season 8, and the San Remo stop was moved up on the calendar, and it appears that attendance for the once prominent poker tournament will once again be down. In 2010, the EPT San Remo attracted a massive starting field of 1,240 entrants (which was won by Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree), and earlier this year the EPT San Remo attracted 987 entrants.

Well, the Season 8 stop in San Remo is once again looking at a decrease in attendance as just 359 players registered for Day 1a of the tournament (compare this to the 438 players that registered on Day 1a earlier this year).

The EPT San Remo Main Event is taking place right on the heels of the World Series of Poker Europe, so perhaps an inordinate amount of players will be registering on Day 1b, which would need 628 entrants just to match last year’s attendance number.

In addition to the competition from other poker tours, the EPT San Remo is also being hurt by Italy: With many players already griping about a lack of services available, and the lackadaisical attitude that pervades Italy –One player in particular commented how the only laundry service he could find took two days and would not launder socks or underwear! Another issue is the strict Italian laws governing online poker, which makes it nearly impossible for non-Italian residents to log on to play during their stay in Italy.

Stay tuned for tournament-centered updates as the EPT San Remo Main Event filed is pared down in the coming days!
