Viktor Isildur1 Blom wins PCA Super High Roller
Team PokerStars Pro Viktor “Isildur1” Blom seems to have recharged his batteries after a long layoff from both the online and live poker tables. Blom. Who was basically MIA from PokerStars and the live tournament scene from the summer until December managed to tally over $1 million at the PokerStars tables since his return, and yesterday he scored his first major tournament win by capturing the PCA Super-High-Roller title.
The win itself was worth over $1.2 million, but perhaps more importantly for the now 21 year-old Blom proves that he is not merely an online cash-game player and can hang with the best poker player in the world regardless of the game or format.
Only five of the eight final table participants would make the money in the event, which left Scott Seiver in the unenviable position of finishing in 6th place, costing him $100,000, while Daniel Negreanu managed to pocket a hefty $250k for finishing just one-spot better. The other players who went home empty-handed from the final table were Mike “Timex” McDonald and Team PokerStars Pro Humberto Brenes.
Joining Blom and Negreanu in the final five of the event were 2010 PCA Main Event champ Galen Hall, longtime poker player Dan Shak, and 2010 WSOP Champion Jonathan Duhamel who had perhaps the most difficult month of any poker player ever in December –Duhamel was of course the victim of a violent home invasion that saw tied-up, beaten and robbed.
Blom’s climb to the top of the leader-board on Saturday began when he eliminated Negreanu in 5th place, followed by his knockout of Duhamel in 4th place. At this point Blom simply used his chips for maximum effect during three-handed play, and when his opponents did decide to fight back Blom was fortuitous enough to pick up really strong hands –evidenced by his elimination of Galen Hall when Hall pushed with Pocket 9’s only to see Blom turn over Pocket Aces!
Blom systematically wore down Dan Shak during heads-up play, and managed to dodge Shak’s 15-out draw on the final hand to win the tournament.
1. Viktor “Isildur1” Blom – $1,254,400
2. Dan Shak – $846,700
3. Galen Hall – $470,400
4. Jonathan Duhamel – $313,600
5. Daniel Negreanu – $250,900
6. Scott Seiver — $0
7. Mike “Timex” McDonald — $0
8. Humberto Brenes — $0
The Super-High-Roller victory basically insures us that we will see Blom participate in a full tournament schedule in 2011, which will also mark his WSOP debut, as up until now his age disqualified him from playing in the tournament series. And anytime the young Swede gets his hands on some money it usually leads to him taking some shots in ultra-high-stakes cash-games, so you know that money will stay in the poker community –whether it’s in Blom’s hands or perhaps durrrr’s, Galfond’s, or another high-stakes poker pro’s is the million-dollar question!
