Scott Blumstein, a 26 year old poker player from New Jersey had not really won anything big at a live poker tournament but for some reason he believed that he could win the 2017 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. To put things into perspective, the 2017 WSOP Main Event had a buy-in of $10,000 and tournament organizers announced that this was the third biggest WSOP Main Event of all time – as 7,221 players had registered and prize money totaled a massive $67,877,400.

Blumstein Wins WSOP Main Event

None of this fazed the young poker pro who spent most of his time playing online poker. Blumstein had a plan and that was to not jump into the WSOP and play as many events as possible like the majority of poker players who hope to do well and see if they can cash out in as many events as possible. Blumstein’s plans specifically targeted the Main Event and he trained and prepared to battle it out with a huge playing field and to be physically healthy so he could put in the long hours at the table.

He also told his friends that he was going to win the Main Event and whether they believed him or not, he believed in himself and wasn’t surprised when he found himself as one of the 9 finalists at the 2017 WSOP. Just by finishing in the final 9, Blumstein was guaranteed to take home a prize of $1 million but that wasn’t on his mind – he wanted to go all the way.

Blumstein had the best chance amongst the 9 finalists because he was the chip leader with 97,250,000. Throughout the final table, Blumstein looked like the man to beat and the competition found it very hard to dislodge him from his position of confidence. In the end, it came down to him and 26 year old Dan Ott who did his best to push Blumstein but it finished quite unexpectedly when Blumstein drew a river card and eliminated Ott.

Blumstein Achieves American Dream

This was the biggest win of Blumstein’s career and will certainly give him more confidence to play high stakes live poker tournaments. However Blumstein says that he is not certain if he wants to continue to concentrate on poker, or go back to school or launch a business. One thing he is certain of right now and that is he has achieved the American Dream of having financial freedom and the choice to do what he wants with the rest of his life.
