Chris Ferguson is going to be crowned 2017 World Series of Poker Player of the Year (POY). This news was announced by the World Series of Poker (WSOP)earlier this week via Twitter after the elimination of John Racener who was in second place in the race for WSOP Player of the Year title.

Ferguson Gets Entry Into 2018 WSOP Main Event

This POY win ensures that Ferguson will gain entry into the 2018 $10,000 buy-in WSOP Main Event and also gets to feature on a banner alongside previous WSOP Players of the year and WSOP Main Event winners which will be displayed at the Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino.Ferguson will be joining the likes of George Danzer who won the POY title for the year 2014, Mike Gorodinsky who won the POY title for the year 2015 and Jason Mercier who won the title for the year 2016 in the special group of POY title winners.

Ferguson held the number one spot in the rankings for POY before the start of WSOPE Main Event which took place over the weekend at the King’s Casino in Rozvadov, Czech Republic. The controversial poker player managed to finish twice in the top-four of the 2017 WSOP $10,000 championship events held in Las Vegas. This performance earned him the lead position in the POY race and an entry into the €10,350 buy-in WSOPE Main Event at the popular King’s Casino.

Ferguson Has Had A Good Run Since Returning

Ferguson was on the Full Tilt Poker board before the infamous Black Friday occurred in 2011 and was involved in a money laundering scandal that tarnished his image in the global poker community. As a result, Ferguson decided to stay away from all live poker tournaments and dropped off the radar from 2011 to 2016. He resurfaced in mid-2016 when he announced that he planned to attend the 2016 WSOP which elicited negative responses from many in the poker community.

Ferguson played well and finished in ninth position for the WSOP 2016 POY race which was eventually won by Jason Mercier. He continued his good run of form at the poker table in 2017 with six cashes which also includes his sixth bracelet win in the WSOPE Event #7: €1,650 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better.

In the 2017 WSOP POY race, Racener was in a good position to challenge Ferguson as he was just 136 points behind him and Ryan Hughes was in third place with 184 points separating him and Ferguson. On Nov 6th which was Day 2 of the WSOPE Main Event, Racener was eliminated and Ferguson secured the 2017 WSOP Player of the Year title. Ferguson’s outstanding performance during the WSOPE received support from Phil Hellmuth on Twitter which in turn triggered negative responses from Daniel Negreanu and others.

Most of the reactions of the poker players were positive, congratulating Ferguson for his win barring a few exceptions. Though there is an ongoing debate on the formula for calculating POY and doubts being raised on the merits of Ferguson winning the POY title, credit must be given for the way he has played after returning to the felt.
