The tournament returned to the RDS in Ballsbridge after a lengthy absence from Ireland, as it has been eight years since the EPT was last held on Irish soil.

The Dublin edition of the EPT will see 67 poker events taking place over the course of 12 days. It kicked off last Tuesday and yesterday saw the €25,750 High Roller event come to a conclusion, with the Italian poker player Mustapha Kanit scooping first prize of €501,640.

The 24-year old from Alessandria currently sits at the top of Italy’s player rankings as the country’s most successful poker star. He has certainly racked up some impressive wins recently, with a portfolio of big wins. He has a first place victory last year in the EPT Season 11 Grand Final €50,000 Super High Roller event in Monte Carlo, where he cashed out with €936,500 – his biggest career win to date. He also picked up €738,759 for his victory at the EPT Season 12 €10,300 High Roller in Barcelona. His latest six-figure cash out in Dublin put him in an enviable position on the global poker rankings.

The EPT Dublin High Roller had a €25,750 buy-in, the highest ever in any poker tournament held before in Ireland. It drew 70 entrants and played down to a final table on Saturday night with eight players, who returned on Sunday to finish the game. The eight-handed final consisted of a number of impressive high-profile players, who were all assured of €65,170 in prize money. Ivan Luca from Argentina was first to crash out in the first hand, followed by Nick Petrangelo of the USA, who picked up €84,040 for his seventh place position. Soon after this, the UK’s Keith Johnson played a weak ace and called off his remaining chips, but missed and had to settle for sixth place and €106,330. Kanit began to seriously dominate the table, busting the Australian player Jeff Rossiter out in fifth place for €137,200 and then taking down Swedish Anton Bertilsson who cashed out €176,640. The final three consisted of Chance Kornuth, who very recently won the 2016 Aussie Millions $25,000 Challenge, and Charlie Carrel, who is the former EPT Monte Carlo High Roller champion. It was a tense showdown between the three players, but neither Kornuth nor Carrel could compete with the massive chip lead that Kanit had over them, as the Italian had a massive 5,460,000 in chips going into the final table. His initial chip lead only got bigger as the game went on.

In the end, Carrel ran a weak ace into Kanit’s jacks to crash out in third place (with a €234,100 prize) allowing Kanit to face down Kornuth in a head to head finale. Kornuth looked temporarily in the lead, but eventually Kanit moved ahead and decisively took first place when Kornuth’s ace missed. Kanit snatched his third EPT high roller victory with a flourish, leaving his opponent with €360,150 as second prize consolation.

The all-time leading Italian poker player can add his PokerStars European Poker Tour Dublin €25,750 High Roller victory to his collection.
