Full Tilt requests private meeting at hearing

It didn’t take long for the poker world to be both disappointed and outraged by the supposed-to-be public hearing between the Aldernay Gambling Control Commission and Full Tilt Poker, as the first order of business for Full Tilt Poker lawyer Martin Helsop was to request a private meeting to argue for a delay in the hearing!

Helsop’s reasoning for requesting the delay were: “that it was in the interests of justice and did no harm to the proceedings to hold the hearing privately. He also cited the commercial sensitivity involved with negotiations for a potential new investor as a factor, and the fact that there was significant press interest that could prejudice the case” according to PokerNews.com’s Barry Carter who is on site with a number of representatives from the poker world.

The request was later granted and the two sides will meet behind closed doors to determine if the hearing should be put off until a later date or not. The decision caused a few murmurs, and one contentious moment when poker pro Harry Demetriou stood up and lambasted the decision saying, “What about the interests of the players? Why you are protecting this corrupt company?”

So as the saga of Full Tilt Poker, it appears the July 26, 2011 hearing has been anti-climactic at this point. Hopefully more news will come out of the Plaza Victoria Hotel in London today, but I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting for it, as it appears likely the meeting will be adjourned until a later date –a decision that will likely be the final straw as far as the poker world is concerned.
