Lawmaker behind WA State ban talks to ESPN

Washington State Senator Margarita Prentice didn’t hold back in a recent interview with ESPN poker columnist Gary Wise when she unleashed some of the most ignorant and inciting comments regarding online poker players. Prentice, who helped lead the way for legislation that turned playing online poker in Washington State into a Class-C felony, punishable by $10,000 fines and possible jail time, told Wise: “I just think some of these arguments are utter nonsense. You mean you’re going to move so you can play poker? Gee, lots of luck in your life… I have nothing against card playing. That’s fine. If you want to do that, but I’m sure not going to worry about someone… you know. Let them go pump gas.”

Wise also spoke with Barney Frank (D-MA) the author of HR 2267 which seeks to legalize and regulate online gaming on a national level. Frank’s response to Prentice’s remarks was just as pointed at the lawmaker as her own were towards poker players: “Wow. The intolerance of that is just appalling, but that’s the attitude that goes with the sense you have the right to dictate other people’s lives to them.”

Poker Players Alliance Chairman Alfonse D’Amato also spoke with Wise stating, “She is why people are angry, because of the arrogance of those in government who say they know what’s best for you.”

Prentice went on to say how she can’t understand how the legislation would impact anyone: “I’ve never really understood all of the hysterics, and all of the beefs. I just can’t see anybody who’s having any major suffering over it.”

Further riling up the pro-poker base was the fact that Prentice signed off on a bill that would bring legalized Keno to Washington State! Obviously her hypocrisy knows no bounds.
