Poker Players Alliance makes a return trip to CPAC
Last year I wrote how the PPA had gone into the lion’s den and set up shop at CPAC, a conference for conservatives to sound off on their ideals, and despite the inherent difference of opinion, there was apparently enough headway made that the PPA is making a second trip.
Online poker is a divisive issue in the conservative movement: On the one hand most conservatives rail against the vice of gambling –which the uninformed quickly lump poker into—while at the same time they are against government intrusion on personal freedoms.
Like last year, the spokesmen, and figurehead, for the PPA will be 2004 WSOP Champion Greg Raymer. The former patent attorney does a wonderful job of clearly and intelligently explaining the goals of the PPA, and the reasoning behind their push to legalize poker.
The PPA’s goal is to rally support for Barney Frank’s bill to legalize and regulate the industry, which currently has 65 co-sponsors. However, only four co-sponsors are republicans, a number that if it were to increase would make the bill’s passage much smoother and more unilaterally accepted.
