Cheating at PokerWhen it comes to cheating in poker virtually all of the forum chatter revolves around super-users, tampered laptops, poker bots, and so on. Because online poker cheats get all the attention I thought it would be a good idea to demonstrate that online poker isn’t the only part of the game rife with cheating, evidenced by a recent rash of stories about cheating and scams in the live poker arena.

Ivey’s Crockford’s Lawsuit

The big story on this front is of course Phil Ivey’s lawsuit against Crockford’s Casino, where the poker superstar claims the casino is illegally withholding nearly €8 million of his money. Of course, Crockford’s has their own version of events, and claims Ivey gained an unfair advantage in the game by “Edge Sorting,” which Ivey claims is not against the rules.

Archie Karas Arrested

You most likely have never heard of Anargyros Karabourniotis, although you may recognize the name he routinely uses, Archie Karas. Karas is famous for going on a streak in Las Vegas where he turned $50 into $40 million, and then gave it all back in the ensuing years.

Well, it appears that Karas’ winnings may not have all been on the up-and-up considering he was recently arrested for allegedly marking cards at the Barona Casino in San Diego County according to a Las Vegas Review-Journal article.

This is Karas’ fifth arrest for cheating at blackjack according to the article; the other four coming in Nevada.

Infrared Contact Lenses

A group of European card cheats received some very stiff sentences for their latest gambit, marking cards and using infra-red contact lens to read the marks according to a report in The Province.

Three men were convicted in the ploy:

* Stefano Ampollini, 56, received two years in prison and a €100,000 fine

* Gianfranco Tirrito, 55, received a sentence of three years in prison and was fined €100,000

* Rocco Grassanno, 57, received a sentence of 30 months and a fine of €50,000

Navy Vice Admiral Counterfeiting Poker Chips

I don’t even really know where to start with this one. according to ABC News, Navy vice Adm. Tim Giardina is being implicated in a counterfeit casino chip case. Giardina is the deputy commander at US Strategic Command, making him the #2 man in charge of US nuclear war-fighting forces according to ABC.

The Casino Intelligence Network

A recent article on FoxNews.com details how casinos are trying to thwart these offending players, creating a vast intelligence network shared by casinos around the globe. The article itself revolves around a player using an invisible much like in the contact lens story from above.
