2012 WSOP preliminary tournaments “Cliffs Please”
The 2012 World Series of Poker Main Event is now upon us, and with only one preliminary tournament still to be decided (Wednesday’s WSOPC National Championship) I’ve decided to take a look at the entirety of the 2012 WSOP preliminary event schedule using the much appreciated poker forum “Cliffs Please” format. So here we go!
Ladies win three bracelets; make over a dozen final tables
It was a good year to be a woman at the World Series of Poker as the ladies managed to break-out of their long slump and captured three WSOP bracelets during the preliminary events (one of which was the Ladies Championship bracelet of course). In addition to three wins, the ladies also made over a dozen final tables at last count, and it became such a regular occurrence that it was almost a non-story by the end of the WSOP.
The Big One for One Drop was really BIG
The Big One for One Drop $1,000,000 tournament definitely delivered. With all the hype and the build-up there was a real chance for a letdown, but thanks to Guy Laliberte and the other players the One Drop tournament was a rousing success.
One of the biggest moments in WSOP history will likely be Antonio Esfandiari embracing a stack of money totaling over $18 million.
Phil Hellmuth wins WSOP bracelet #12
After three close calls in 2011, Phil Hellmuth finally broke through with his 12th career WSOP bracelet in 2012, and his first in a non-holdem tournament. The Poker Brat’s win came in the $2,500 Razz tournament.
Phil Ivey dominates the first half of the 2012 WSOP
Even with Phil Hellmuth’s historic 12th bracelet, the real story during the first half of the 2012 WSOP was Phil Ivey, and his two week run that saw him make five final tables.
The David Baker and David Baker show
Both David Bakers had a good 2012 WSOP, with “Bakes” Baker winning his second career WSOP bracelet, and “ODB” Baker picking up his first, and finding his way to three final tables in the process. All-in-all, if your name was David Baker you likely had a very good WSOP in 2012.
Mike Mizrachi wins second Poker Players Championship in three years
For Mike Mizrachi the 2012 World Series of Poker may be his defining moment. We all know about the success that Mizrachi has had over the years, but when he won his second Poker Players Championship in the last three years Mizrachi was able to put a stamp on his career, and will likely go down as one of the best tournament players of his generation.
Konstantin Puchkov grinds out 11 cashes
Lost in the shuffle of all the big names doing amazing things (see above) was the record-setting performance of Konstantin Puchkov who broke the single year cash record at the WSOP, by grinding his way to 11 cashes in 2012. Puchkov can still add to this total should he play at the WSOP Europe this September.
