Daily Grind: Home game addict, sickest setups and more

Poker News BoyEvery day the poker world is inundated with more news, reports, and gossip, than any of us can read. At PokerNewsBoy.com we understand that there are only so many hours in the day, and only so much time you can set aside to follow all of the stories taking place, so we have come up with the Daily Grind as a solution. The Daily Grind will make sure you don’t miss any of the more obscure poker stories, wrapping up the day in poker in one neat, concise, column.

Today I’ll take a look at a number of stories including some of the “almost” sickest setups from the PokerStars Sickest Setup contest, a wife’s fear that her husband’s penchant to play in a weekly home game could turn him into Worm, and the addition of Mike Sowers to the TournamentPokerEdge.com roster.

PokerStars’ ALMOST sickest setups

PokerStars recently ran a contest to find the “Sickest Online Poker Setup” out there, and while the winner hasn’t been officially declared (we all know who it is, the college kid with his laptop up against his girls back while she sits reverse cowgirl on him) they have released the “almost” winners on the PokerStars blog: http://www.pokerstarsblog.com/team_pokerstars_online/2013/the-almost-sickest-setups-133012.html

HELP, my husband plays cards with his friends once a week!

I’ll let this Q&A in the Ottawa Herald via Focus on the Family speak for itself, but unless her husband’s home game is at Guy Laliberte’s estate I do believe this woman needs to pump the brakes a bit; a gambling addiction because he plays a $20 home game once a week, really?

QUESTION: My husband has been participating in a weekly poker night with his friends. Lately I’ve become concerned that he’s turning into a compulsive gambler. He says I’m worried about nothing. How can I be sure?

JIM: It sounds trite, but your husband may be in denial. Dr. Robert Custer, a trailblazer in the field of gambling addiction treatment, says that denial “means refusing to acknowledge something to oneself, getting oneself to actually believe that there is no danger at all.” It’s a common mindset among those who struggle with gambling addiction.

Someone once asked me if I smoked and I said no (I don’t and never have), so I must be refusing to acknowledge my problem according to this logic. Actually, I could have helped this woman by answering only the latter part of her question: How can you be sure? Because you’re worrying about nothing!
