PokerNewsBoy MascotEvery day the poker world is inundated with more news, reports, and gossip, than any of us can read. At PokerNewsBoy.com we understand that there are only so many hours in the day, and only so much time you can set aside to follow all of the stories taking place, so we have come up with the Daily Grind as a solution. The Daily Grind will make sure you don’t miss any of the more obscure poker stories, wrapping up the day in poker in one neat, concise, column.

Today I’ll take a look at a number of stories including an interesting blog post by Dusty Schmidt, the Party Poker Premier League roster, and the unfortunate passing of Jerry Buss.

Laker’s owner and poker enthusiast Jerry Buss passes away at 80

The poker world, and the sports world, lost one of its own this week when Los Angeles Laker’s owner Jerry Buss lost his long battle with cancer and passed away at the age of 80. Buss who is best known for his role with Lakers (where he presided over 10 of the team’s 16 NBA titles) was an avid poker player, regularly playing in high stakes games.

Poker players remember Buss as a solid practitioner of the game, but more importantly he was considered one of the bright spots in the game, always engaging and even acting as a mentor of sorts for a number of players.

Party Poker Premier League roster taking shape

On March 17, 2013 the Party Poker Premier League will return, and the roster is starting to take shape. So far a number of big names have reserved their seat in one of the most hyped cash-games in poker: Huge names like Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari, Phil Hellmuth and Phil Laak will join the ever-present Tony G at the Premier League, as will young guns Daniel “Jungleman” Cates and Luke “FullFlush” Schwartz.

How online poker affects the brain

In one of the most interesting blog posts in recent memory online mega-grinder Dusty “Leatherass” Schmidt talked about a recent study he had done on his brain, and how he and his psychiatrist feel mass-multi-tabling online poker for hours on end has rewired Dusty’s brain… and not in a good way.

The blog is probably the most important read for any online poker player, but especially for players who put in countless hours in front of their computer screen. As Dusty puts it:

“I was the first cash game player to make SNE in 8 months back in 2007. I made over a million dollars in the process and life seemed great. But I think doing so set the wheels in motion for my brain to change in a mostly bad way and I regret my decision greatly. The fact is, it wasn’t worth it. I wish I had just utilized my talent differently by playing 1/3 as much poker and enjoying a couple hundred grand a year rather than chasing a million. I can always make a buck, but I only have one brain. What good does the money do when it robs you of time with your children that you can never get back? I’d write a check for a million dollars right now if I could get back all of the priceless moments with my kids I missed while off in the wonderland I was living in while at home, but away from poker.”
