Dwan Opens $1 Million Gap On Antonius In Durrrr Challenge – But
Tom ‘Durrrr’ Dwan and Patrik Antonius have resumed their multi-tabling nosebleed stakes heads-up match at Full Tilt Poker after a break of several months. Two sessions back-to-back have seen Dwan extend his lead to more than $1 million. However, with just under 32,000 of the promised 50,000 after more than a year – many are asking whether the ‘Durrrr Challenge’ has lost its appeal?
New year of 2009 saw the publicity for the challenge at its height, with forums buzzing, followers commenting on every sizeable pot, and challengers – including superstars such as Phil Ivey and David Benyamine – lining up to accept the 3/1 odds Dwan offered to beat him. As we move into 2010 the same commentators are shrugging their shoulders and instead looking forward to the return if Swedish high-stakes player Isildur1 – who famously took $5 million from Dwan before ultimately losing it to Brian Hastings, then disappearing from the online poker scene altogether.
In their first session of 2010 just over 1000 hands produced a surprisingly small swing in favor of high-rolling Finnish player Patrik Antonius, who took $58k from Dwan to reduce his deficit in the challenge to $878k. To put this swing into perspective for those not used to $200 / $400 blinds, this would be the equivalent of just $145 at the 50c / $1 level.
Dwan took his lead to over a $1 million in the latest session, which saw him win almost $200k from Antonius in a succession of huge pots over 852 hands. The questions as we look into 2010 are – when will the first challenge be finished? And will Dwan, Ivey or Benyamine be interested in keeping this concept going?
