New study points to poker players being grumpy loners

In what appears to be far from concrete data, two psychologists by the names of Paul Fayngersh and Mark Kizelsteyhn asked 73 volunteers from online poker forums to answer a questionnaire covering a number of different topics. At the heart of the research the two were trying to discover the differences between poker players and the general population as well as the differences between winning and losing players.

Here is how the two researchers sum up their study:

… Despite the fact that poker players are actually quite diverse, come from many different backgrounds, and exhibit a multitude of playing styles, there does appear to be a common thread that ties everyone together.

So what follows below is an abridged and modified summary of our research designed into a one-page website. We hope you enjoy it and would greatly appreciate any feedback, comments, or questions you may have.

So how did the poker community fare? It seems based on the data that we are below average in the following categories: agreeableness, extraversion and conscientiousness. The researchers also found poker players to be “unconcerned with others’ well being, and interested more in themselves than getting along with others… quiet, low-key and deliberate.”

Perhaps the most important finding –but one that is commonly known in the poker world—is that the less emotional players tend to be the bigger winners: ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING NEWS! According to their conclusions, “players who are less easily affected by negative emotions have significantly higher win rates!”
