Sunday Storm tournament debuts on PokerStars Sunday

This Sunday will mark the end of the popular Sunday poker tournament the PokerStars Sunday Quarter Million, as the online poker room has announced the prize-pool for the tournament has been raised to $300,000, and with the increased prize-money so too has the name of the tournament changed: To the Sunday Storm.

The tournament will still feature just an $11 buy-in, and in honor of the change PokerStars will be hosting a special $1 million guarantee Sunday Storm poker tournament on March 27, 2011. The tournament is slated to begin at 4:30 EDT.

With a buy-in of just $11 and PokerStars advertising the hell out of this tournament with satellites and promotions, it’s not out of the possibility that the record for the most participants in a poker tournament may fall during the first-ever Sunday Storm –PokerStars is also offering all first-time depositors a free ticket to the tournament if they sign-up using the referral code “STORM”.

The current record in terms of number of players is 65,000, which was set by PokerStars on the very same day that the previous record of 35,000 entrants was bested by rival Full Tilt Poker. The PokerStars tournament was a $1 buy-in with $130k in guaranteed money on the line. The recently played 5th anniversary tournament of the Sunday Million actually flirted with this record as nearly 60,000 players entered the $215 buy-in tournament –which is why it’s likely the Sunday Storm and its $11 buy-in will best the 65,000 player mark.
