The five best female poker players right now

vanessaselbstFor the third time in the past decade, the tournament poker world is definitely changing. In the early years of the “poker Boom” it was an influx of talented young players that changed the demographics of poker tournaments around the globe; then in the mid-2000’s we saw an influx of European and Australian players; and now we are seeing a third invasion, this time of talented female tournament players.

In this column I’ll take a look at who I consider to be the best female tournament poker players in the game.

#5 — Ana Marquez

Marquez is probably the least known player on this list, but I don’t expect that to remain the case for much longer. A member of Team PokerStars Pro Spain, Marquez has had a breakout 2013, in both the live and online arenas.

#4 — Xuan Liu

She’s hit a bit of dry spell in 2013, but Xuan Liu is still one of the rising stars in the game. She’s capable of playing just about any poker format, and has proven she has what it takes to make deep runs in major tournaments. Like all of the other players on this list, Liu also puts in the volume needed to be a successful player.

#3 — Maria Ho

Of all of the “pretty-faced” females from the poker boom Maria Ho is far and away the most consistent performer. Liv Boeree and Vanessa Rousso have their big scores, but neither has consistently put up the results, or put in the volume that Maria Ho does.

#2 — Jackie Glazier

Glazier has risen through the ranks of the tournament worlds since she first appeared on the scene in 2008. Working her way up from small local tournaments in her native Australia, Glazier is now a WSOP bracelet winner (and has finished runner-up in an open-event) not to mention being the last woman standing in the 2013 WSOP Main Event.

#1 — Vanessa Selbst

I’ll listen to arguments on all of the other players on this list (maybe you think they are ranked too low, or someone else is more deserving) but this is beyond debate: Vanessa Selbst is the best female player in the game right now.

Not only is Selbst the best female tournament player, but I would argue that she is on the short-list for best tournament player, male or female.
