When the European Poker Tour (EPT) announced they had added a stop in Berlin, Germany, many in the poker industry had a feeling the tournament would attract a large field of poker players, and the final tally in Berlin made this speculation reality.
The tournament is the largest poker tournament ever held in Germany, and came close to setting the EPT record –minus the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure which is technically an EPT event–set in San Remo during season 5 with 1,178 entrants.
In the end, 945 poker hopefuls anted-up the $5,000 entrant’s fee in hopes of taking home the €1,000,000 first-place prize-money. Very few of poker’s biggest names decided Read the rest of this entry…

Police in Idaho were tipped off that there was a wagered poker game that was in operation every week that would be conducted by 20 players who were buying into the game for $20 each
Acting on the tip, the police headed to the Twin Falls Senior Center, surely this had to have been a wind up? The police had to act on the tip and so placed monitoring onto the centre on a weekly basis.
Monitoring of the building seems to confirm the information that was provided to them and they bust into the centre to investigate further.
On entry of the building, they found that there were 20 pensioners who were seated within a poker game, revealing that they were infact wagering funds for entry into the game, something that is illegal in Idaho. Read the rest of this entry…

Europe’s second most populated city is about to host its first European Poker Tour event. The EPT has made numerous stops in Germany, but this will be the tour’s first stop in Berlin: The previous stops in Germany were in Dortmund, during seasons 3, 4, and 5.
Season 5’s German stop ranked third in overall attendance, and was the largest tournament ever held in Germany. PokerStars is so confident in the turnout that the site has guaranteed a $1,000,000 prize-pool for the $5,300 buy-in tournament.
Historically, Berlin has never been a hotbed of poker activity, and until the worldwide poker explosion the game of choice in Berlin was 7-Card-Stud. However, all that changed post 2004, and the EPT Berlin event should draw big numbers. With a huge population base, a major metropolitan city, a large casino, and as one of the most visited cities in the world Read the rest of this entry…

When play resumes at the Commerce Casino Wednesday, 22 poker players will be battling for one of six spots at the final television table at the Los Angeles Poker Classic. Among the 22 hopefuls is a virtual who’s who list of poker stars, apparently being so close to Hollywood demands star-power.
Leading the way is 2001 World Series of Poker Champion Carlos Mortensen, who was able to overtake the chip lead from Day 3 chip-leader Mark Newhouse (who now sits in second place). Also in contention at the LAPC:
Steve Sung, currently in 9th place with 671k chips. You may recall Sung won the “Stimulus Special” at the 2009 WSOP.
Johnny Chan, currently in 17th place with 406k chips. Chan won back-to-back WSOP championships in 1987 and 1988, and finished 2nd in 1989! His 10 WSOP bracelets rank him second on the all-time list.
Annie Duke, currently in 21st place with 241k chips. Duke, along with Phil Hellmuth, Read the rest of this entry…

Last week we announced the launch of Victory Poker. We also talked about all the promotions and new celebrities that they have signed to make poker players aware of the brand. Alec Torelli even left Doyles Room to move to Victory Poker, which suggests this could be one of the up and coming Online Poker Sites to watch out for. Then you also have the inclusion of Poker SuperStar, Antonio Esfandiari and playmate of the year, Sara Underwood, to top it all off.
However, PokerNewsBoy are taking it one step further and giving all new players that sign up using our Victory Poker Bonus/Rakeback code, 40% Rakeback. Read the rest of this entry…

FlopTurnRiver.com cites a Canadian University’s study that shows playing online poker reduces cortisol levels in the brain. The study claims that as poker players become more focused on the game their body produced less cortisol. This would go against everything we know about poker since cortisol is produced in response to stress or anxiety. The study claims the reduction is due to the focus required to play poker, due to the level of attention needed to play the game.
Although the researchers prove a valid point, not only about poker but perhaps why people engage in games of skill and gambling, I would have loved to have been in the room when the researchers pitched this study for a grant, and once again when funding for this study was granted. A few entrepreneurs have decided to let real-money online poker rooms’ battle for legalized online poker, while they use the loopholes that have allowed Brick & Mortar poker events to take place for years.
One of the biggest of these legal online poker sites is PurePlay, which instead of asking players to risk money at their own discretion charges a monthly fee to compete at its tables. Players pay a $25 monthly membership fee, and are able to play in PurePlay’s tournaments that award cash prizes. Since the money awarded is from membership fees, and also advertising, PurePlay can state that its members are not risking their own money! Quite the loophole!
PurePlay claims it has 2.4 million members, which at $25/month equals a lot of money, and makes the site extremely attractive to advertisers Read the rest of this entry…

Marchese is a well known commodity in the world of online poker, but the man known as “KingofCards” to his online fans has had zero success in live tournaments. That was until he won the first-ever NAPT event at the Venetian Casino in Las Vegas. Marchese and 871 other poker hopefuls put up the $5,000 entrants-fee to be part of the first ever NAPT event.
Marchese had to beat out a tough final table that included runner-up Sam Stein, a PokerStars sponsored player; Eric Blair who finished 8th, another PokerStars pro; and longtime tournament veteran “Miami” John Cernuto, one of poker’s most colorful, and respected, players.
The win was worth $872,648, which prompted Marchese to offer the following statement, “The event is one of my favorites now.” Considering the $872k payday, and his first major tournament Read the rest of this entry…
