Spencer Bacchus retiring

The poker community has one less opponent in Congress after the announced retirement of Spenser Bacchus (R-AL) on Monday.

Bacchus is one of the most vocal critics of gambling in congress, and as the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee since 2010, Bacchus managed to keep any poker legislation from being brought up in the committee –a complete 180 from his predecessor, Barney Frank (D-MA) who was one of online poker’s biggest advocates.

I’ll take the lead and speak for the entire poker community when I say, so long Spencer!

RIP Tom Sexton

The Sexton family and the poker world suffered a huge loss this week when Tom Sexton, the brother of Poker Hall of Famer Mike Sexton passed away after a battling pancreatic cancer. Mike Sexton took to Twitter to deliver the very sad news to the community, and the poker community with heartfelt condolences.

“My brother & best friend, Tom Sexton, passed away early on Oct 1st. He died of pancreatic cancer. He’ll be missed by all. #restinpeaceTom”

Tom was a longtime player and columnist in the poker world, who toiled away before the game became glamorous and mainstream. Tom used his experiences during these days to later write the terrific series called Sexton’s Corner at PokerNews.com from 2007-2008.

Joy Miller is feeling the impact of the government shutdown

Polarizing poker media personality Joy Miller was planning on getting married at Yosemite National Park this weekend, but thanks to the government shutdown it doesn’t look like this is in the cards. Miller and her up-in-the-air wedding were profiled on the local news where she detailed the nightmarish scenario.

Ivey’s Room gets a subtitle

A.G. 400; that’s all you’re getting out of the Aria, and the new placard that sits under the “Ivey’s Room” plaque as you enter the high-stakes area.

At first the Aria was completely mum on what was going on, and what the initials and numbers stood for, but after some sleuthing the poker world pretty much has it all pieced together. Unfortunately it’s not a Masonic reference, or a long lost code pointing the way to the Holy Grail. The initials are a reference to a particular player in the game, and the number 400 denotes the $400,000 buy-in the game requires.
