Netherlands cracks down on poker players’ unpaid taxes
In 2008 the Netherlands imposed a 29% tax on poker winnings, a move that saw many top Dutch players leave the country in search of countries with more lenient tax laws regarding poker. For the players who stayed, hoping the laws were more show than anything, it would seem the Dutch are taking the new tax laws very seriously.
One example is Steven Van Zadelhoff, a top poker player both online and live, who had his home raided by Dutch authorities. Zadelhoff, who has won the PokerStars Sunday Million in addition to numerous other tournament wins and cashes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, is a sponsored pro for Everest Poker.
Zadelhoff’s lawyer has stated that his client is working to resolve the matter with the Dutch tax authorities, but has decided to leave the country –going to Malta—to clear his head.
