Is Sam Trickett the best poker player in the world?

Move over Phil Ivey; step aside Tom “durrrr” Dwan; make room Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond; there is a new candidate for the title of the best poker player in the world, and it’s the UK’s talented young star Sam Trickett.

While the reports are nearly impossible to verify, it would seem that for the second straight year Sam Trickett will be leaving Macau with a seven-figure profit after crushing the high-stakes cash-games that take place in the Las Vegas of the East. Last year Trickett famously won over £1 million in the game, (something he personally told to BLUFF Magazine during an interview) and according to pokerportal.asia Trickett’s haul in 2011 was even better, somewhere in the neighborhood of $2.3 million USD!

Trickett has had an incredible year in 2011, starting with a victory at the $100k Super-High-Roller tournament at the Aussie Millions, followed by a 2nd place finish in the $250k Super-High-Roller event just days later. With close to $3 million in tournament earnings under his belt before the end of January 2011 was sure to be a good year for the young UK pro.

Trickett would also final table a WPT Regional tournament in France, sign a sponsorship deal with Titan Poker, cash in the inaugural Epic Poker League Main Event, Final Table the High-Roller tournament at the EPT Championship in London, finish 4th in the WSOP Europe €5k PLO tournament, and most recently win over $1 million after his victory at the Partouche Poker Tour Championship.

Trickett tallied nearly $4.6 million in tournament winnings in 2011 and sent his career total over the $6.3 million mark; enough to become the UK’s all-time money leader by surpassing UK poker legend Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott.

Phil Ivey’s name may roll of the tongues of most poker players when asked who the best poker player is, but in my mind there is nobody playing the game at a higher level than Trickett. He has proven over the past two years to be a well-rounded player capable of playing the best tournament or cash-game players in the world. Trickett also has a knack for rising to the occasion, evidenced by his big wins and high finishes in high-profile tournaments, as well as his utter dominance of the high-stakes cash-games in Macau (which may not be well reported on, but are well followed by the poker world).

Are they playing mixed game or straight NLHE in Macau?

  2. Steve Ruddock says:

There were a number of high-stakes games going, but the highest action was straight NLHE from what I can tell –there was also a sizable PLO game going as well
