Poker’s most underrated players Part 2
There are always players who get a lot more attention than they deserve in the poker world, and it’s usually a lot of fun to discuss who the most overrated poker players are; whether it’s because of previous accomplishments, a good PR campaign, or perhaps they are simply likable players with good back-stories. On the other hand you have the underrated players; the players who fly below the radar and simply go about their business day in and day out; these are the poker players I want to examine in this series!
I’m going to take a look at 10 players who I feel are underrated in the poker world. The criteria I used is that the players:
· Are established, winning, poker players
· Are fairly well-known to begin with
· Have career accomplishments/results you are unaware of
Here are the10 players I have chosen as the most underrated in all of poker, #’s 6-10:
6. Carlos Mortensen
It’s hard to understand why Mortensen is so overlooked in the poker world: The 2001 WSOP Main Event champ –which was quite likely the toughest final table ever for the Main Event—also has THREE World Poker Tour titles, and over $9 million in career tournament earnings. Yet, Mortensen couldn’t even crack the top 20 in voting for last year’s WSOP Tournament of Champions!
7. Eugene Katchalov
Katchalov has quietly amassed a very impressive poker resume with over $6 million in career tournament earnings, not to mention his cash game abilities. He is easily one of the few overlooked young pros we have in poker.
8. David “The Dragon” Pham
Pham has quietly gone about his business for years now, and has amassed over $8 million in tournament earnings since the 1990’s. The former two-time Player of the Year is constantly amongst the leaders in every tournament category.
9. Joe Hachem
It’s hard to put such a well known player on this list, but most people are unaware of Hachem’s career accomplishments, and view him only as the 2005 WSOP Champion. In fact Hachem has proven himself to be one of the top poker players in the world and is approaching an astonishing $11 million in career earnings.
10. JC Tran
Tran is another poker pro who quietly goes about his business, and his business is amassing cashes in poker tournaments! Tran has won over $8 million in his career, a feat made all the more impressive by his lack of big scores: In fact Tran only has one cash –it wasn’t even a win—of over $1 million, a $1.1 million score for his runner-up finish in the 2007 WPT LA Poker Classic.
