PokerStars goes for the tournament record today

Today PokerStars will attempt to break their own record for the largest online poker tournament in poker history, a remarkable achievement considering the entire US market is cut off from playing at the site! The old record has already fallen during pre-registration, and with just a few hours until the tournament gets underway it looks like the tournament will reach its cap of 200,000 players!

In 2009 PokerStars ran a $1 tournament in an effort to thwart then-rival Full Tilt Poker’s efforts to break the record with a special 5th anniversary tournament with a $5 buy-in. Full Tilt did manage to eclipse the record, but PokerStars would reclaim it just a few hours later when over 149,000 players registered for their hastily contrived event.

Now PokerStars is showing what they could have possibly achieved had they planned the tournament, as the site is on its way to boasting a field of 200,000 players, with around 25% of their previous player base! I shudder to think what number PokerStars could have reached if the US market was allowed to participate…

Today’s tournament is part of the 10th Anniversary celebration taking place at the world’s largest online poker site, and entrants in the tournament will find a $250,000 prize-pool up for grabs, with the winner set to receive $50,000 –not too shabby for a $1 investment!

Stay tuned for a report on the record-setting tournament tomorrow, along with a wrap-up of the special Sunday Million PokerStars will be hosting later today.
