WCOOP PokerStars Tournament

wcoop tournamentIn live poker, the World Series of Poker is the most prestigious event in the world. Winning a bracelet establishes a player as a true poker champion, and the Main Event winner is the World Champion of Poker. Online poker also has their own equivalent of the WSOP. It is known as the World Championship of Online Poker.

The WCOOP tournament series is held every year in September. More details about the 2011 WCOOP should be out very soon.

What is the WCOOP

The World Championship of Online Poker, WCOOP for short, is a series of events hosted every fall on PokerStars.com (The SCOOP is held in the spring). This event offers events in all disciplines of poker on the website and awards prize pools in the Millions. Players that win a WCOOP event win their own gold championship bracelet similar to those given at the WSOP. The WCOOP bracelet signifies that a player is an online poker champion. Last years WCOOP awarded $63,157,150 to players, making it the richest event in the history of the event.

Why Play the WCOOP

Much like the WSOP, the WCOOP offers events in every discipline of poker. This allows all players the opportunity to become a poker champion. In addition, you will actually face field of significant talent and strength in these events. How often would a live stud event break 100 players? Outside of the WSOP, hardly ever. Last year, the Stud event drew 472 players, and the Triple Stud event drew a massive field of 788. While that is not the same as other events that draw in the tens of thousands, it is still a significant field, and a significant prize pool for stud players.

The biggest reason to play the WCOOP is clearly the prize pools available. Last year, 18 out of 62 events broke $1 Million in prize pools. The Main Event drew 2,443 players and had a whopping $12.215 Million in prize money. POTTERPOKER walked away with $2,278,097.50 for taking down the event.

Winning a WCOOP event also garners its own share of fame. Much like winning a WSOP bracelet, a WCOOP bracelet win garners the attention of poker media from all over the world. Winning an event can put you on the front page of PokerNews.com, PokerNewsDaily.com, BluffMagazine.com, and maybe even get you a mention in CardPlayer magazine. Also, the events are recorded for PokerStars television, so your win can be watched by players and fans all over the world.

How to Qualify

If you want to play in the WCOOP, you can naturally buy-in directly, but if you cannot afford that, you have options. First, there are multi-table satellites of varying buy-ins that award seats based on prize pools. There are also Sit-N-Go single and multi-table satellites. Single table events typically pay out one seat, where multi-table satellites pay on average from 2 to 4, depending on number of players. Step satellites are also a popular way to try and win your seat. You can start for less than $10 and play a series of single table Sit-N-Go tournaments to try and step your way up to a seat.

The schedule for the 2011 WCOOP has yet to be released by PokerStars, but customarily comes out sometime in the summer, generally after the WSOP Main Event. This years WCOOP promises to be the largest in the history of the event. Who knows, maybe a prize pool of $20 Million is possible in the Main Event.
