In its seven-year run, the Sunday Million has launched careers, validated careers, and been a benchmark for online poker tournament players to measure themselves by –not just winning the event, but final tables made and even whether or not you play in the Sunday Million has become a poker metric.

On March 3rd, 2013 the PokerStars Sunday Million will turn seven years old. The Sunday Million was one of the first weekly tournaments that landed on every online tournament pro’s must-play-list, and over the years the Sunday Million has grown into one of the most prestigious tournaments in online poker. Every week thousands of players register for the $215 tournament at PokerStars, bringing together a mixture of rank amateurs (most of whom satellite their way into the event), aspiring pros looking for a big payday (many of whom satellite their way into the tournament), and of course top-tier pros (some of whom satellite their way into the tournament).

PokerStars is likely expecting the event to fall in between the two largest Sunday Million’s in the site’s history: The largest was the December 2011 Sunday Million celebrating PokerStars 10th Anniversary, which boasted a $10 million guarantee. The tournament saw a total of 62,116 participant (mind you this occurred AFTER Black Friday) and generated a prize-pool of over $12 million. The winner of the tournament was a player using the screen-name “First Eagle”, who won $1,146,574.65.

While the record is likely out of reach, the 7th Anniversary Sunday Million should surpass last year’s 6th Anniversary tournament which boasted a $6 million guarantee. The event attracted 33,732 players and saw the prize-pool balloon to $6.7 million. The winner was set to receive over $1,000,000 ($1,064,737.08 to be exact) but a final table deal was struck that would see a user playing under the screen-name “slyfox151” win $480,761.30 after getting the extra $120,000 that was set aside for the winner. In all eight players were involved in the deal and PokerStars player “toode” was the biggest winner, pocketing $590,482.92.

Satellites for the 7th Anniversary Sunday Million are already running, and with buy-ins ranging from one-table satellites to FPP super-satellites there will likely be a lot of diversity in skill level on March 3rd.
