Chris Klodnicki wins Epic Poker League Main Event

Despite a five-handed final table, it took nearly 15 hours of play on Sunday for the Epic Poker League to crown its third champion of Season 1, and in the end it came down to two poker pros searching for their first major tournament title of their career.

The final table began with a lineup of Scott Clements, Mike “The Grinder” Mizrachi, Chris Klodnicki, Joe Tehan, and chip-leader Andrew “LuckyChewy” Lichtenberger. In a first of its kind wrinkle the EPL decided to play down to the final two contestants, who would then play a best two-ou-of-3 match for the title –which you will see was the main impetus for the long 15-hour day.

The short-stacked Clements was the first player eliminated from the final table, followed by Mizrachi, and then Joe Tehan; leaving Lichtenberger and Klodnicki to play for the title. Even with a substantial chip-lead (3.4 million to 1.5 million) it took Klodnicki 140 hands to best Lichtenberger in the first match and another 70 hands in match 2 before claiming his first major tournament title. Had the match gone to a third round of heads-up play Lichtenberger and Klodnicki would have started with even chip-stacks (a format I’m not really fond of).

Klodnicki has quietly put together an impressive 2011 campaign including 6 WSOP cashes this past summer as well as a recent 7th place finish at the WPT Foxwoods World Poker Finals. For his career Klodnicki’s tournament winnings no exceed $2.8 million according to thehendonmob.com.

Lichtenberger was coming off a 4th place finish at the WPT Five Diamon Poker Classic last week (where he earned over $200k) and his runner-up finish in the EPL Main Event constitutes his third six-figure cash of the year. In only his third full year on the live tournament trail, Lichtenberger’s career live tournament winnings are now in excess of $2.1 million according to thehendonmob.com.
