It’s a big weekend for poker advocates around the world as the International Poker Federation (IFP) wrapped up its groundbreaking Nations Cup Poker Tournament on Friday and gets set to host a $500k freeroll tournament known as “The Table” this weekend.

The Nations Cup was a unique event where teams of poker players representing countries from around the world (along with the online team Zynga) took part in a Duplicate Poker match. Duplicate Poker deals each team the same cards and awards points based on how well the hand is played. In the end it was the contingent from Germany that would come out on top, tallying 24 points, just enough to edge out Brazil and France, both of whom finished with 22 points.

The real surprise from IFP President Anthony Holden came when he announced that Team Zynga (not widely thought of as one of the best online poker sites when it comes to talent), who finished in 4th place overall, followed by France in 3rd and Brazil in 2nd (despite boating the same point total, Brazil edged out France by means of a tiebreaker, having accumulated a larger chip-stack during the Duplicate Poker match) and of course Germany in 1st place.

Team Germany captain Stephan Kalhammer received the trophy and was quickly swarmed by his compatriots, including Sebastian Ruthenberg, Moritz Kranich and Tobias Reinkemeier, Sandra Naujoks, Konstantin Buecherl, Hans Martin Vogl and Tim Reese.
