Iowan wins back-to-back tournaments on the MSPT

There are a lot of poker tournaments currently taking place; A LOT. It seems like every poker Google Alert I receive is about some tournament taking place that I wasn’t even aware of, which was precisely the case when it came to the BLUFF Magazine Mid-Stakes Poker Tour (MSPT). The MSPT is in its infancy, but thanks to poker player Dan Sun it has already seen something done that has yet to happen on the European Poker Tour, and just recently took place on the World Poker Tour, which is in Season 11.

So what was it that Dan Sun managed to accomplish during the Third Season of the MSPT? Sun just captured back-to-back Main Event championships on the MSPT after winning the MSPT Meskwaki Casino Main Event three weeks ago Sun captured the Main Event title at the Grand Falls Casino Resort in Larchwood, Iowa this weekend, making him the first back-to-back winner on the tour, and the first repeat winner as well.

In an interview with Bluff Magazine Sun commented on his hot streak saying, “I grinded an average stack all of Day 2 until the final table. I never really felt comfortable.” Adding, “I had a great run of cards at the final table. But also, the experience I’ve had making a couple of other deep runs in major events has definitely helped me learn what I need to do to close things out. I’ve applied that and really focused more on tournaments this past year. It’s paying off.”

Sun won $77,301 at the Meskwaki Casino Main Event, a $1,000 buy-in Main Event that attracted 301 entrants, and followed this up in his home state of Iowa by defeating 215 players and capturing the $60,486 first-place prize, along with the commemorative watch awarded to MSPT winners.

Sun is no stranger to poker tournaments, having final tabled two Heartland Poker Tour Main Events in 2011, finishing in 3rd place at the Mahnomen Main Event, and 4th in the Quapaw Main Event. His career tournament earnings now stand at over $175k.

Sun said he plans on making the trek to Wisconsin to take part in the next stop on the Bluff MSPT tour, hoping for the unheard of three-peat. Here is a look at the final table payouts from The Grand Falls Casino Resort Main Event from Bluff Magazine:

1. Daniel Sun — $60,486

2. Taylor Tollefson — $29,823

3. John Hayes — $18,770

4. Tom Lee — $14,599

5. Christopher Burke — $12,513

6. Adam Zych — $9,385

7. Russell Spaid — $8,133

8. Denver Smith — $7,091
