Poker pro Annie Duke wins NBC National Heads-Up Championship

The National Heads-Up Championship tournament has become one of the most coveted titles in all of poker. The tournament utilizes an invitation only entry, bracket-style format, comprising poker’s elite players. Since only the best poker players are invited –along with a handful of celebrities and online qualifiers—it’s difficult to use the word “upset” or “underdog”, but this year saw the first female player capture the title in Annie Duke.

Duke had a strange path to the final match, never having to face an elite poker player; squaring off against the likes of Andy Bloch, Darvin Moon, Paul Wasicka, Jerry Yang, and Dennis Phillips. Her final opponent, Erik Seidel, had a much more difficult path to the championship match: Huck Seed (who has owned this event), David Williams, Chris Moneymaker, Peter Eastgate, and Scotty Nguyen.

Duke, who is better known for being the face of UB Poker –along with Phil Hellmuth—and for her show-stealing performance on Celebrity Apprentice than for her poker playing ability, which is considerable, will take home the $500,000 first-place prize-money.
