Amateurs hold their own on The PokerStars Big Game

After four weeks of The PokerStars Big Game the amateur “Loose Cannon” have been doing quite well against the pro players.

In Week 1 we were introduced to perhaps the weakest player of the “Loose Cannons” Ernest Wiggins, who employed a weak/tight strategy, but was able to catch some cards at the right time –just ask Phil Hellmuth—and ended his week up $50,300. His stats over 150 hands: VPIP = 28%, PFR = 2%, and a TAF of 1.4.

In Week 2 the “Loose Cannon” was an online grinder, named William Davis, whose playing style was instantly respected by the other players. Unfortunately for Will, even though he received a lot of premium hands, the cards were not kind to him, and he ended up going busto towards the end of the 150 hand session. Will’s stats for the week were almost perfect for a 6-Max game: VPIP = 33.8%, PFR = 25.4%, and a TAF of 3.1.

In Week 3 another very strong amateur entered the Big Game, Nadya Magnus. Unlike Will, Nadya played well and ran well, and ended up with $63,600 in profit. Nadya played a very tight/aggressive game, and was able to catch a few big flops to turn the biggest profit to date. Nadya’s stats for the week were: VPIP = 24%, PFR 14%, and a TAF of 3.7.

After a short hiatus, Week 4 saw Troy Howard enter the Big Game. Howard played an alright poker game –a bit weak/tight, especially post-flop– but it was obvious he was very uncomfortable and was broadcasting tells throughout the show. Troy went broke towards the end of his session, making the “Loose Cannons” 2-for-4 on the show. His stats for the week were: VPIP = 31.9%, PFR = 9.4%, and a TAF of 1.6.
