Democrats’ official platform silent on online poker

A week after the Republican National Convention it’s now the Democrats turn and of interest to poker players was what the “Official Party Platform” on online poker would be, something poker players were hoping would be diametrically opposed to what the republicans put forth just a week ago.

How bad was the Republican stance on online poker? It was bad enough that they took down the website because of the blowback from poker players on this one issue – an issue they probably thought would get as much attention as an ice cream cart in a blizzard. Instead the poker world pushed back, but the question is; did the Democrats get the message?

Last week I wrote an article explaining how President Obama could lockup the poker player vote with just a passing reference to online poker legislation. Unfortunately, and I guess not surprisingly, the President doesn’t read my musings on the poker world, considering the Official Platform released by the Democrat Party was missing any reference to online poker.

As frustrating as silence might be, silence is still better than the abject refusal of the republicans, but with their silence the Democrats and President Obama have failed to come anywhere near locking-up the poker vote, a vote that theoretically could be 100,000 or more votes in what will be a very close election. The poker world wants a champion, but unless there is a sudden change of heart by President Obama during his speech on Thursday night, it looks as if we will have to be contented with ambivalence; the alternative being someone who has clearly stated his opposition to online poker.

So here is the comparison. The Republicans Official Party Platform on online poker is:

“Millions of Americans suffer from problem or pathological gambling that can destroy families. We support the prohibition of gambling over the Internet and call for reversal of the Justice Department’s decision distorting the formerly accepted meaning of the Wire Act that could open the door to Internet betting. The Internet must be made safe for children. We call on service providers to exercise due care to ensure that the Internet cannot become a safe haven for predators while respecting First Amendment rights. We congratulate the social networking sites that bar known sex offenders from participation. We urge active prosecution against child pornography, which is closely linked to the horrors of human trafficking. Current laws on all forms of pornography and obscenity need to be vigorously enforced.”

And here is what the Democrats Official Party Platform is:
