High stakes poker pros contemplate leaving US

In a recent Time article, a number of online poker players talked about the options they now face in a post-Black Friday poker world, a world in which the high-stakes action has dried up for US players. Amongst the players quoted in the article are good friends Justin “zeejustin” Bonomo and Isaac “Ike” Haxton, two of the top online poker players in the world.

Haxton and Bonomo discuss their plans to move abroad with a small group of friends –to an as of yet undecided location—in order to continue to ply their trade at the online poker tables; Melbourne, Malta, and Madrid were named in the article so perhaps they are leaning toward a major international city beginning with the letter M.

Haxton, who recently took to the 2+2 poker forum in an effort to sell the $300,000 he currently has locked in his UB Poker account, which he’s unloading the money for the bargain basement price of around $.30 on the dollar if you’re interested, told Time: “Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter where I end up,” said the 25-year-old Haxton, who currently lives in Las Vegas. “So long as I can get myself to a country with good Internet connections, a country that allows me to earn a living again, I’m there.”

Bonomo’s concerns ran more towards logistics, as he voiced concerns over Visa issues, and also calling it quits with his girlfriend –who hopefully doesn’t read Time.com!

While big-time players like Haxton and Bonomo have a number of different options available, the smaller stakes players are not as fortunate, especially players with families, and replacing an income of $30,000-$75,000 by rejoining the work-force is simply not an option in the current economy.
