The perennial #2 man, David Williams finally broke through and captured his first major championship –Williams did capture a WSOP bracelet in 7-Card-Stud in 2006. Williams finished 2nd in the 2004 World Series of Poker Main Event, 2nd in the 2004 Borgata Poker Open, as well as two 4th place finishes in WPT events in 2006.

Williams has had numerous big cashes since bursting onto the poker scene, but the $1.5 million firt-place prize-money, along with a WPT Championship, clearly reestablishes Williams as one of the best poker players in the world.

Williams was able to survive a severe misstep in his preflop play when he pushed all-in over the top of Shawn Buchanan’s re-raise with 99, Buchanan held pocket Queens, but was able to flop a 9 and eliminate Buchanan who was in a virtual dead-heat for the chip-lead with Williams. Winning the hand gave Williams a virtual stranglehold on the tournament. William’s sole opponent remaining was 2009 POY Eric Baldwin, but outchipped 4-to-1 Baldwin only lasted about20 hands.

Williams later told the press that his long-time friend Josh Arieh had informed him of a certain tell of Buchanan’s: Arieh’s advice was that if Buchanan thought about a re-raise he was bluffing, but if he re-raised quickly he had a hand. Of course, in the deciding hand where Buchanan held QQ he tanked for a long time, which prompted Williams re-raise! At the time Williams said he was thinking “F***ing Josh!”, but the flopped set of 9’s likely put Arieh back in William’s good graces.
