Marvin Rettenmaier wins WPT Cyprus

For the second time since signing with Party Poker Marvin Rettenmaier (known as Mad Marvin throughout the poker world) has captured a World Poker Tour title; an amazing and fluky accomplishment when you take into account that Rettenmaier’s new home, Party Poker, owns the World Poker Tour!

On Thursday Rettenmaier captured the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic Main Event, the first tournament of Season XI of the WPT. With the victory Rettenmaier added another $287k to his lifetime tournament winnings that now tally nearly $3.3 million. In the process he became the first person in WPT history to win back-to-back WPT Main Events (having captured the Season X WPT Championship back in May), a huge accomplishment and one that makes Party Poker’s signing of Rettenmaier a few months ago look like one of the greatest predictions in poker history.

Rettenmaier’s good run began at the very beginning of the $25k WPT Championship when Party Poker announced he was joining the prestigious Team Party Poker. Rettenmaier then rewarded Party Poker by winning the WPT Championship, his first major tournament victory! Now Mad Marvin has somehow managed to eclipse winning one of the most prestigious tournaments in poker by becoming the first player in history to win back-to back WPT’s.

Rettenmaier outlasted a tough field that included plenty of well known players like the brothers Mizrachi, Chino Rheem, and Dominick Nitsche to name just a few of the pro players who took the trip to Cyprus for the first stop on Season XI of the WPT tour. In all, the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic attracted 329 players thanks to the two starting days and the reentry format the tournament put in place.

Here is a look at the final table payouts from the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic Main Event:

1. Marvin Rettenmaier — $287,784

2. Artur Voskanyan — $184,020

3. Ran Azor — $118,360

4. Victor Parashiv — $87,610

5. Joseph El Khoury — $65,770

6. Kiryl Radzivonau — $52,590

Rettenmaier is perhaps the most well-known and successful German poker pro, which is saying something in today’s poker world, considering the likes of Martin Finger, Tobias Reinkenmeier, and Dominick Nitsche all hail from Deutschland.

The next stop on the World Poker Tour will be the WPT Parx Open Poker Classic, which will take place in Pennsylvania from August 10th to the 15th, featuring a $3,500 Main Event. After Parx the WPT will head to California for the Legends of Poker at the Bicycle Casino, before heading back across the Atlantic for the WPT Grand Prix de Paris.
