The World Poker Tour (WPT) Bay 101 Shooting Star tournament is one of the oldest events on the WPT, whose history stretches back to 2002, and the 2013 version of the tournament saw a record-setting field of 635 players take to the poker tables at the Bay 101 casino in San Jose, California. It should be pointed out that the buy-in was reduced from $10,000 to $7,500 this year, but even with the reduction the total prize-pool exceeded the 2012 tally.

As is always the case at the Bay 101 Shooting Star tournament, bounties were placed on the heads on a number of the top poker players in the game, and with the chance to pocket a quick $2,500 for an elimination the Bay 101 tournament once again has a terrific mix or pros and amateur players. Of the 635 entries only 249 will be back in action for Day 2 on Wednesday –which will likely go right up until the 2 AM deadline considering the plan is to play-down to just 18 players on Day 2!

At the end of Day 1a it was poker pro Andrew Lichtenberger who landed atop the leader-board and “luckychewy” will start Day 2 of the tournament as the overall chip-leader, with Day 1b’s chip-leader, Rhea Motley, in third place overall. Both Motley and Lichenberger will pocket $10,000 for their efforts and ending the day atop the leader-board. The official payout schedule has not been released at this point, but WPT officials have indicated that the first-place prize will be over $1 million, with a total prize-pool of over $4.5 million.

As I mentioned above, the plan for Day 2 is play-down to just 18, but with a record-setting field it’s unlikely this will happen, which means the remaining players will likely be at the Bay 101 tables from 11 AM (the start time) until the 2 AM cutoff time.
