WPT Season X kicks off in Spain

It’s hard to believe that we are entering the tenth season of the World Poker Tour (WPT) as it seems like only a few years ago we were introduced to the tournament series that brought us Mike and Vince in the booth, created superstars like Gus Hansen and Daniel Negreanu, and gave us the all-in, cliffhanger, commercial breaks complete with anticipatory music.

The World Poker Tour wasted little time transitioning from the Season IX Championship won by Scott Seiver at the Bellagio, to the debut tournament of Season X, the WPT Spanish Poker Open which began less than a week later, and despite the ten year milestone, Season X kicked off with little fanfare.

With everything going in the poker world, as well as the tournament’s proximity to the 2011 World Series of Poker that will begin on May 31, the WPT Spanish Poker Open saw a marked decrease in attendance from last year’s 326 entrants, drawing only 216 total players this time around.

The €3,500 buy-in Main Event did draw a number of top players including Martin Jacobson, Mclean Karr, Leo Margets,  Marvin Rettenmeier, and Juha Helpi to name a few of the participants.

With 216 runners the total prize-pool for the WPT Spanish Poker Open came in at just under €700,000 (€691,200 to be precise) with 27 players making the money –1st place will be worth €206,000 + an entry into the $25,000 WPT Championship at the end of Season X, and at the opposite end of the scale 19th-27th place will receive €4,500.
