Jason Mercier has been awarded the prestigious title of WSOP Player of the Year after winning two gold bracelets at this year’s live poker tournament in Las Vegas. He was assured of having clinched the title well before the competition is due to finish, thanks to an impressive display in three consecutive preliminary events. He won the $10K 2-7 No Limit event #16, the $10K H.O.R.S.E. event #24 and came in 2nd place in the $10K Razz event #20. He also came 8th in the $10K Omaha Hi-Low event #32. His performance in this year’s WSOP was enough to reward him with the coveted title of POY 2016.

Winning two events, and claiming a runner up position in a third was a great display from the Florida poker professional. He effectively catapulted himself far ahead of the pack before the 2016 WSOP series had even gotten to the midway point.

Mercier added one last prize to his repertoire (his 11th cashout so far this summer) in event #69: $1,111 Little One for One Drop. This effectively added to his points lead. His nearest rival, Paul Volpe, was unable to overtake Mercier in the POY stakes. If Volpe had achieved a third-place finish or better in the WSOP Main Event he would have been able to surpass Mercier at the finish line.

Volpe’s finish in the WSOP Main Event (his ninth cash-out of 2016) neatly earned him a nice prize of $216,211 and also gave him a total of 357.62 WSOP POY points. Despite this, he was still left more than 270 points short of Mercier’s grand total.

Some other well-known poker players made an impact on the POY leaderboard. Max Silver picked up big points in three different events, including finishing the Main Event himself last night in 33rd place to move up to third in the POY standings. John Monnette finished in fourth, with Justin Bonomo coming fifth. Both players suffered several near-misses for prestigious WSOP bracelets at this year’s tournament. In sixth-place came Michael Gathy who won his his third career gold bracelet in Event #35: $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em Six-Handed Championship, as well as finishing second in two other big events.

A few top players just missed out on finishing in the top 10 are Michael Mizrachi (11th), Jason Les (12th), Daniel Kelly (13th), Koray Aldemir (14th), and Roland Israelashivili (15th).
