$1k NLHE Somerville, West, Veldhuis headline Day 3

After two days of play the second $1k NLHE Stimulus Special tournament at the 2011 World Series of Poker is down to just 39 players, with a number of very strong pros still in contention for the title.

Among the players who will return to the Rio on Tuesday to hopefully crown a winner in the tournament –if the Hard-Stop Rule doesn’t get in the way—will be chip-leader Jason Somerville, who is trailed by the red-hot Tim West, as well as 2010 WSOP bracelet winner Valdemar Kwaysser, and Team PokerStars Pro Lex Veldhuis.

One player who will not be returning for the final day of play will be Josh “JJProdigy” Field, the notorious multi-accounter who has been banned from virtually every online poker site in the world –as well as a few live casinos– was eliminated in 101st place. I still have a hard time fathoming how this guy shows his face in the poker world.

Here is a look at the Top 10 chip counts heading into Day 3 of the $1k NLHE tournament:

1. Jason Somerville – 749,000

2. Tim West – 677,000

3. Brett Shaffer – 646,000

4. James Schaat – 625,000

5. Yasnar Darian – 604,000

6. Shane Rose – 547,000

7. DeJuante Alexander – 464,000

8. Steven Miller – 417,000

9. Jeff Narman – 369,000

10. Maximilian Lehmanksi – 367,000
