2103 WSOP Notebook Day 3: Poker on parole, MMA, and more

wsop 2013This year PokerNewsBoy.com will be bringing you all of the important news from the World Series of Poker, but we’ll also be scouring the Internet for some of the little tidbits that fall through the cracks. Our daily WSOP Notebook column will focus on anything controversial, funny, or just downright strange, so if you happen across an interesting bit of information please post it here: OFFICIAL 2013 News and Notes and if we find it newsworthy it will make the column along with a special thanks to the person who brought it to light.

I know I promised some funny, interesting, and strange stories for this column, but to be honest, we had a fairly slow day on Friday at the 2013 WSOP; Twitter was fairly calm, the tournaments all ran smoothly and according to plan, and not too much out of the ordinary occurred. Hopefully this weekend sees a return to “poker normalcy” and the degens start to degen, so I can bring a little wit and a lot of snark into this column.

The Strange case of Amnon Fillipi

My highly underpaid (ok, he’s working for free) WSOP researcher Hotshott74 brought this story to my attention: Apparently poker pro Amnon Fillipi has had a bit of trouble with New York City authorities in the recent past, getting busted as part of a marijuana grow operation. While Fillipi is facing some serious charges, and possibly some serious jail-time, he did hit 2-outer of sorts in that his judge decided it was ok for the poker pro to travel out of state to “work”, also known as playing poker, so Amnon is in Las Vegas for the 2013 WSOP.

You can read the full story of Amnon’s plight here: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/poker-pro-charged-marijuana-distribution-travel-article-1.1359222#ixzz2Uu0AyRoU

Millionaire Maker begins today

Just a quick update on today’s schedule: There will be two flights for the Millionaire Maker tournament on Saturday–at 11 AM and 5 PM— a $1,500 tournament with a guaranteed first-place prize of at least $1 million. The WSOP is hoping that structure and the guarantee will attract a huge field, and anyone who busts out during the first flight is eligible for a single reentry during Flight 2.

Bruce Buffer min-cashes in $1k NLHE tournament

Yesterday we told you about Michael Phelps run in the $5k buy-in 8-Max NLHE tournament (which ended on Day 2 short of the money) so today I’ll report on another poker playing celebrity, UFC ring announcer Bruce Buffer, who was a participant in the $1k NLHE event, and managed to squeak into the money for a $1,917 min-cash… the kind of score that would make Allen Kessler extremely proud.

Jason Somerville rocking an Ultimate Poker patch

There are plenty of MMA fans in the poker world, and one of the biggest fans of the sport seems to now be repping Ultimate Poker, Jason Somerville. Somerville posted a picture of himself along with UFC President Dana White on his Twitter account, along with the following message:
