Sometime today, on Friday the 13th, the money-bubble at the 2012 World Series of poker will burst, when just 666 players remain in the field; which is quite a coincidence that two of the most superstitious numbers in the world will collide in such a way during a game where superstition can absolutely ruin you!

Day 3 of the 2012 World Series of poker Main Event saw over 1,700 players from the three starting flights finally come together, as survivors from the Day 1 and Day 2 flights were combined into one field for the first time. Of the 1,753 players that began the Day, over 1,000 would fall by the wayside on Day 3, leaving just 720 players to fight for the 2012 WSOP Main Event title.

Of the remaining players a number of the biggest names in poker have not only managed to outlast nearly 90% of the field, but many have been thriving, building up impressive stacks in hopes of a deep Main Event run. Among the players who will be taking deep-stacks into Day 4 are Lock Poker Pro Paul Volpe, Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst, Sorel Mizzi, Jason Somerville, Marcel Luske, and One Drop Champion Antonio Esfandiari all bagging-up at least 500k in chips at the end of Day 3.

Also fighting their way through Day 3, but with far fewer chips were players like Mike McDonald, Maria Ho, Johnny Chan, John Juanda, Chris Moorman, Phil Collins, Joe Cheong, Erick Lindgren, Liv Boeree, Daniel Negreanu, JC Tran, David “ODB” Baker, Jackie Glazier, Huck Seed, Dan Shak, Marvin Rettenmaier, Jason Mercier, and two non-poker-player celebrities in NHL superstar goalie Roberto Luongo, and actor Kevin Pollack.

Four players managed to cross the million-chip-mark at the end of Day 3, with chip-leader Dave D’Alesandro leading the way with 1.1 million chips. D’Alesandro is trailed loosely by Sean Rice, Jacob Balsiger, and Leo Wolpert. Here is a look at the Top 10 chip-counts heading into Day 4:

1. Dave D’Alesandro — 1,100,000

2. Sean Rice — 1,076,000

3. Jacob Balsiger — 1,065,000

4. Leo Wolpert — 1,003,500

5. Ben Greenberg — 963,000

6. A.J. Jejelowo — 928,500

7. Daniel Rudd — 834,500

8. Jonathan Seelbach — 824,000

9. Michael Ferrell — 821,000

10. Paul Volpe — 820,000

The money bubble should burst fairly early on Day 4, as just 54 players need to be eliminated, and after that the remaining players can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their nearly week-long efforts to this point have not been in vain.

Day 4 will begin at Noon Las Vegas Time (3 PM on the East Coast) and will finish after five levels have been played.
