After 3 close calls Marco Johnson wins first WSOP bracelet

wsop bracelet2After a number of close calls Marco “CrazyMarco” Johnson won his first World Series of Poker bracelet this weekend after triumphing in Event #48, the $2,500 buy-in 6-Handed Limit Holdem tournament. After three runner-up finishes, including one earlier this year, the California poker pro finally captured his elusive bracelet.

With his win, Johnson is also now in Player of the Year contention. So far at the 2013 WSOP Marco has six cashes and three final tables, and is now within striking distance of Daniel Negreanu for the 2013 WSOP Player of the Year award –although that award will likely not be decided until the WSOP Europe in October and perhaps the WSOP Main Event final table which will be played in December.

Here is a look at the Top 10 on the 2013 WSOP POY leader-board, where Marco Johnson has jumped into 4th place:

1. Daniel Negreanu 470.53

2. David (Bakes) Baker 459.10

3. Tom Schneider 438.51

4. Marco Johnson 430.63

5. Chris Klodnicki 400.80

6. Anthony Gregg 390.00

7. Jared Hamby 368.73

8. Daniel Kelly 344.70

9. Jason Duval 328.85

10. Mark Radoja 327.75

The final table, and indeed the entire field once the money bubble burst, was filled with talented poker players, and with the swinginess of Limit Holdem tournaments you never really know how things are going to work out. But Johnson started chipping-up early and often at the final table, taking over the chip-lead after eliminating Maria Ho in 6th place, and never really looking back again.

Here is a look at the final table payouts from the event:

1. Marco Johnson – $206,796

2. Jeff Thompson – $127,801

3. Juha Helppi – $82,956

4. Danny Warchol – $55,457

5. Mike Schiffman – $38,095

6. Maria Ho – $26,858

If Marco’s name and/or screen-name is sort of ringing a bell you may remember him from his involvement in breaking the Absolute Poker Super-User scandal when he requested Hand Histories from the tournament he lost to the infamous “Potripper” account and received the source code –which was later pored over and uncovered the cheating.

With his latest victory Marco now has 23 cashes at the WSOP since 2007, to go along with seven cashes on the World Poker Tour. Even with his live success, Marco is still known as an online poker player, where Cardplayer.com has him at $1.4 million in career online winnings.
