Gus Hansen wins WSOPE Event, 1st bracelet

Three players were able to erase their name from the ‘Best to never win a bracelet’ category this year, and no disrespect to Gavin Smith or Phil Laak, but the latest winner was by far the most noteworthy: Gus Hansen.

To add even more drama to the event, Hansen had to wait a few extra days for his win, when the Heads-Up Championship was put on hold with Hansen and his opponent Jim Collopy tied at 1-to-1 in the finals –both tired competitors, and a British rule disallowing heads-up matches to begin after 3PM were the reasons for the delay. However, the match didn’t finish until Sunday evening since both players wanted to participate in the Main Event of the World Series of Poker Europe, which began on Friday.

Once both players were eliminated for the Main Event they decided to conclude their heads-up match Sunday Evening, and it was Hansen who walked away with the win and his first gold bracelet. It seems impossible that Hansen has never won a WSOP event, but when you take into consideration that he only plays the $10k events it is easier to understand.

Hansen earned £288,409 for the win, which brings his career tournament earnings over the $10 million mark, another huge accomplishment.
