Jeff Madsen now a 3-time WSOP bracelet winner

wsop bracelet2If last year was the Year of the Women at the World Series of Poker than 2013 is shaping up to be the year of the Resurgent Poker Pro, considering the number of players who have won a WSOP bracelet this year after a five-year or longer drought. The latest addition to this club is Jeff Madsen, who won Event #35, the $3,000 PLO tournament on Friday night.

The win marks Madsen’s third triumph at the WSOP, with his first two bracelets coming in back-to-back events back in 2006, a year that saw the young poker pro take Player of the Year honors at the WSOP on the back of his two wins and four final tables. Since 2006 Madsen has struggled to replicate his early career success, making only three WSOP final tables since and never finishing above 4th place.

In Event #35, Madsen defeated a field of 640 players on his way to victory. The final table included another double bracelet winner in Scott Clements, as well as poker pro Jason DeWitt, but on this day the spotlight belonged to Madsen who came into the final day of play as the chip-leader and was never in much jeopardy throughout the day. Here is a look at how the final table of Event #35 played out on Friday:

1. Jeff Madsen – $384,420

2. Douglas Corning – $237,374

3. Michal Maryska – $154,312

4. Danny Hannawa – $113,340

5. Scott Clements – $84,424

6. Ryan Chapman – $63,702

7. William Black – $48,624

8. Joni Jouhkimainen – $37,529

9. Jason DeWitt – $29,265

Madsen hasn’t fallen completely off the poker radar, as he did win the 2010 Borgata Winter Poker Open, and has two recent 6th place finishes in World Poker Tour (WPT) tournaments. But considering how his career began in 2006, at the age of 21, (with a 1st, 3rd, 1st, and 3rd place at the 2006 WSOP) a lot more was expected of Madsen over the years. Madsen was the third youngest bracelet winner in WSOP history, and will likely forever bed the youngest Player of the Year winner.

When asked about his seven-year drought in between bracelet wins Madsen said, It seems like a long time, but some people never win a bracelet… it’s still been the beginning of my career and I’ve just been getting better and learning how to play against certain pros. I’m not unhappy with how long it took. I just needed to take time and get better.”

His recent success hints towards a possible resurgence for the now 28 year old poker pro. As mentioned above, in addition to Madsen’s bracelet win, he also has a couple of WPT final tables over the past year and cashed an impressive eight times at the 2012 WSOP. Madsen’s career tournament earnings are now just a hair under $4 million.
