Why the World Series of Poker has such staying power

WSOPWith a new poker tour popping up almost daily, it’s amazing that no other Casino has tried to replicate what the World Series of Poker has done: Create a once a year event that every poker player wants to be part of in some way, shape or form.
The secret to the World Series of Poker’s success is two-fold: First of all, it was the original, the first poker tournament of its kind, which gives it an incredible leg-up on any potential competitors. However, there is a secondary reason; the WSOP is held in one location at the same time every year.

When you say you are a World Series of Poker main Event champion, people know exactly what you mean. When you say you are a WPT main Event champion more questions need answering: Where did you play? What was the buy-in? And so on.

This is one aspect of the WSOP that the newer poker tournaments have disregarded. Yes, the casinos where they are held stay the same, and take place at the same time of year –for the most part—but the poker tours themselves are a travelling show. This hampers recreational players from taking part in more than one event; in essence the poker tours cater to the professional, who has the time and resources to travel around the globe year-round.

It would be nice to see someone make an attempt at a single tournament held once a year –similar to Amarillo Slim’s Super Bowl of Poker tournament from the 80’s. The Super Bowl of Poker was able to rival the WSOP for over a decade; and this was before the hole-card cam and Internet poker! It amazes me that nobody has tried to rekindle a similar event in the new era of poker.
