WSOP Notebook: PLO/NLHE hits cap, Carter Gill and more

The third day of the World Series of Poker was the biggest so far, with Day 2 of the $1,500 NLHE event in full swing, and two other tournaments getting underway including one of the new events in 2012, a $3k Heads-Up PLO/NLHE tournament.

Besides all of the action taking place at the WSOP tables there was also the story of Carter Gill, the man banned from the WSOP in 2011 for one of the strangest incidents since Men the Master disabled some smoke alarms at Foxwoods in order to use a hot-plate in his room!

So here is a look at all of the interesting tidbits from the 2012 WSOP that occurred on Tuesday.

Phil Hellmuth cashes in Event #2, eyes 12th bracelet

The Poker Brat got off to a good start at the 2012 WSOP, cashing in the first event he played. Unfortunately bracelet #12 will have to wait as Hellmuth was eliminated well shy of the final table, in 61st place.

PLO/NLHE tournament reaches 512 player cap

After a less than stellar turnout for Event #2, Event #3 rebounded as the heads-up tournament reached its 512 player cap on Tuesday. 64 players will be back in action on Wednesday as the tournament plays down to just 8 players.

Carter Gill sighting

For those of you unfamiliar with Carter Gill’s 2011 WSOP experience, let’s just say it didn’t end as he had hoped, and there was a distinct possibility that he might not be allowed to play in 2012!

Gill was escorted from the Rio last year (where he was staying during the WSOP) after some drunken shenanigans that ended with Carter tossing his girlfriend’s clothes out the window of their room. Since he was barred from the Rio he was unable to play at the WSOP which is controlled by Harrah’s.

Well, it seems Carter managed to sweet-talk his way back into the good graces of Harrah’s, and was registered and playing in Event #2, the $1,500 NLHE event.

Phil Ivey sighting

One player who purposely skipped the entire 2011 WSOP was Phil Ivey. Ivey decided to skip the WSOP as Full Tilt Poker’s post-Black Friday troubles were starting to become evident. Well, like Carter Gill there was a Phil Ivey sighting at the 2012 WSOP, and it appears that the man many players consider the best in the world plans on playing a full WSOP schedule.

Hamilton’s and Ferguson’s WSOP banners get obstructed view

Two former WSOP Main Event Champions have seen their banners shifted to a spot on the WSOP main stage which is almost completely out of players’ view. The WSOP has decided to not take-down or cover the banners of Chris Ferguson and Russ Hamilton (two players with questionable recent histories in the poker world) because of their recent transgressions they instead moved the banners to an out of the way spot in the room.
