WSOP Notebook: Threats, insults, and a feel-good story

Posted by Steve Ruddock on Jun 09, 2012 Posted in Poker News | No Comments »

Poker pots weren’t the only battles taking place at the WSOP on Friday, as there were two verbal confrontations at the tables yesterday; one involving Matt Stout and Erik Cloutier, and the other involving Jason DeWitt and Annie Duke.

If controversy isn’t your thing than there was also a terrific feel-good story revolving around the winner of the $1,500 NLHE Shootout.

Matt Stout vs. Erik Cloutier

There was an interesting Tweet from Lock Poker Pro Matt Stout during yesterday’s action:

”59k @ 500/1k #WSOP17. E. Cloutier is making threats @ me. Was being a dick 2 me then got mad that I shared this: http://wickedchopspoker.com/meet-new-stupid-poker-criminals-hall-of-fame-inductee-eric-cloutier/“

While I’m not sure what happened between the two, it seems it wasn’t simply an off-handed comment that got under Stout’s skin, as Cloutier also Tweeted about the incident, although in a more anonymous way:

“Some kids this days in this poker world have mouth that will get them in serious problem. Dumb like a rock chasing money.”

We’ll keep you posted if any more details come to light.

Poker Pro turned Army Officer wins WSOP bracelet

If you want a feel-good story for the 2012 WSOP than look no further than the Brandon Schaefer who won the $1,500 NLHE Shootout event on Friday. Schaefer is a former poker pro who was a force on the European poker scene in the mid-2000’s but grew bored with the game in recent years. Schaefer decided to join the Army to become a helicopter pilot.

Schaefer played the WSOP event because he was in Vegas for the Electric Daisy Carnival (which is this generation’s Woodstock/Lollapalooza/Love Parade) and decided to get a little bit of a poker fix in –now he has an extra $311k in his bank account just before he starts flight training.

Here is a look at the final table payouts from the event:

1. Brandon Schaefer – $311,174

2. Jonathan Cohen – $192,559

3. Adam Kagin – $120,329

4. Layne Flack – $87,446

5. David Chase – $64,555

6. Michael Corson – $48,393

7. Jeff Madsen – $36,809

8. Brandon Steven – $28,375

9. Justin Schwartz – $22,168

Jason DeWitt fires a shot across the bow of Annie Duke

Annie Duke’s recent plight with the Epic Poker League didn’t keep her away from the 2012 WSOP (as we predicted) but one poker player was simply not letting her sit by and get a free pass. Jason DeWitt decided to let Annie Duke know what he thinks of her, and in true Daniel Negreanu style it wasn’t a polite rebuke of her recent actions. In a series of Tweets the 2011 bracelet winner said:

“12k 75/150 blinds. Annie gets moved to my table. She gets run over and busts with A7 vs AJ. I told her to go fuck herself when she busted,”

“And that she’s a disgrace to the poker community. She looked surprised and said ‘thank you’ then walked out #someonehadtosayit,”
