EPT Berlin down to 17 players heading into penultimate day

EPTAfter four days of action the 2013 PokerStars European Poker tour (EPT) Main Event in Berlin, Germany is down to just 17 players. A huge field of 912 players turned out over the course of the two Day 1 flights, and with just 17 players left it looks as if Germany has a very good chance of keeping the title in-house, as eight out of the top nine chip-counts belong to German players.

The biggest name still in contention is heads-up legend Olivier Busquet, who finds himself near the bottom of the leader-board with just 736,000. Busquet, an online legend, hasn’t managed to replicate his online success in the live poker arena up to this point, but an EPT Berlin victory would sure go a long way towards achieving that end.

Another fairly well-known player still in contention (but even lower than Busquet on the leader-board) is Calvin Anderson. Anderson has only 561,000 chips heading into Friday, but the young American has put together a pretty impressive resume in his brief career, including a recent 5th place finish in the Irish Open Main Event.

There is also a former EPT Champion still in contention for the title, Norwegian poker pro Kevin Stani. Stani won the 2010 EPT Tallin Main Event, but has struggled in live tournament since, with only a handful of low-five-figure cashes since his big win.

When play resumes on Friday the remaining players will find themselves in Level 24 with the blinds at 12,000/24,000 with a 3,000 chip ante. Play will likely be short and sweet on Friday as the 17 remaining players will call it a day after playing-down to the final table of eight. With the majority of the field sitting on a stack of less than 50 Big Blinds to start the day, it could be a very short day indeed.

Here is a look at the top 10 chip counts heading into Friday at the EPT Berlin Main Event:

1. Roman Herold – 4,485,000

2. Dashgyn Aliev – 3,931,000

3. Khiem Nguyen – 2,788,000

4. Alexander Helbig – 2,040,000

5. Robert Haigh – 1,659,000

6. Yasar Guden – 1,619,000

8. Robert Auer – 1,380,000

9. Daniel-Gai Pidun – 1,191,000

10. Roman Korenev – 1,186,000
