Katchalov denied Triple Crown at EPT Barcelona

A stacked final table returned to the poker tables on Thursday to crown a champion in the largest poker tournament ever held in Spain, the 2011 PokerStars EPT Barcelona Main Event.  A total of 811 entered the tournament at the beginning of the week, and the final eight players had their eyes set on the €850k in first-place prize-money that was on the line.

There was one player at the final table who had a little bit more to play for, as Eugene Katchalov had the chance to become the third Triple Crown winner of 2011, and just the fifth overall, but he would enter the final table on life support with the shortest stack amongst the final eight players. However, with some good play, and some good cards, Katchalov managed to chip-up to the top of the leader-board, and found himself in a virtual tie with Martin Schleich and Dragan Kostic when the tournament became three-handed.

Katchalov would be the first of the three eliminated –dashing his chances for the Triple Crown—and in the end it was German poker pro Martin Schleich who would hoist the EPT Barcelona trophy in victory. Here is a look at the final table payouts from the EPT Barcelona Main Event:

  1. Martin Schleich — €850,000
  2. Dragan Kostic — €532,000
  3. Eugene Katchalov — €315,000
  4. Raul Mestre — €244,000
  5. Tomeu Gomila — €185,000
  6. Saar Wilf — €145,000
  7. Juan Manuel Perez — €105,000
  8. Isabel Baltazar — €73,000

Katchalov’s third place finish did earn him over 1,000 Card Player Magazine Player of the Year points, putting him right in the thick of the very competitive race, trailing only Galen Hall and Sam Stein at the moment.
